Quick answer: Archive a conversation when you want it out of the main Messages list without intentionally deleting it. To restore it, open User Settings, expand Archived Chats, identify the correct conversation, and use the Unarchive control.
Choose archive only when you may need the chat again
Archiving is an organization action. Deletion is a removal action with different consequences. Use archive for completed storylines, inactive companions, or conversations you may resume later. Do not use deletion merely to reduce clutter.
Before archiving, check the companion, chat name, recent preview, and memory scope. Clear names are important when several conversations exist under the same companion.

Open the intended conversation and use its available archive action. The exact menu position can change as the interface evolves, so verify that the selected control says Archive rather than Delete. After the action, confirm that the chat leaves the main Messages list.
The current public documentation explains restoration in detail but does not promise that every interface revision places the archive control in the same location. Use the label and resulting list change as the confirmation.
Restore the chat from User Settings
- Open User Settings.
- Expand the Archived Chats section.
- Find the correct companion and chat preview.
- Select the Unarchive button shown beside that conversation.
- Return to Messages and open the restored chat.
Verify conversation and memory scope after restoration
Check the chat name, recent message history, companion, and selected memory scope. Restoring a chat should return that conversation to Messages; it does not merge it with another private chat or rewrite its history.
Use the workflow for separating storylines and assigning a shared Memory Group when several chats with one companion need different continuity. Use the distinction between saved memory and recent conversation context before deciding that recall changed after restoration.
Do not confuse an empty archive with deletion
If the conversation is absent from both Messages and Archived Chats, first verify the account email and companion. Check whether the conversation was created as a guest, under another sign-in method, or under a different account. Do not create several replacement chats until the identity and archive list are checked.
If the chat cannot be located after those checks, use the account, archive, and history checks for a conversation that is missing.
Build an archive routine for multiple storylines
Rename chats before archiving them, keep one clear active storyline per purpose, and archive only after confirming the latest message is present. A short name such as “Travel storyline — finished June” is easier to restore than several chats with the default title.
