Companion vs Persona in Secrets AI: What Is the Difference?

The terms are easy to confuse because both can include a name, background and preferences. Their direction is opposite: the companion defines the other participant, while the Persona defines the role the user is playing.

A companion is the AI participant

Secrets AI offers ready-made companions and custom characters. Their personality, appearance, voice and background shape how the AI responds. A custom character is still the companion side of the conversation.

A Persona is the user identity. The official Persona guide describes a profile that tells the companion who you are. It can include a name, About Me information and interaction preferences. Personas can support roles such as a detective, executive or fictional traveler.

One conversation has one active Persona

The current documentation says only one Persona can be active at a time in each conversation. The user may switch it, but new context does not rewrite what was already said.

Switching Persona is not the same as opening a new chat. A new Persona changes the user role. A new chat creates a separate message history and allows a memory-scope choice. If two roles require incompatible histories, a separate chat is usually clearer than switching identities inside one established thread.

Persona context and memory are different

The Persona supplies immediate identity context. Secrets AI also documents a memory system that may retain details from conversation. A Persona does not automatically erase memories associated with the chat or Memory Group.

Use a fresh-story setup when you need stronger separation.

Personas do not control generated companion images. The current official guide states that Personas cannot be used in image generation. They affect how companions perceive and interact with the user in conversation, not the visual output of companion images.

Use a Persona when the user role changes

• You want to roleplay a different identity.
• The companion should address you by a different name or status.
• You need a concise background for the user side of the scene.
• You want consistent interaction preferences for that role.

Use a custom character when the AI role changes

• You want a different companion personality.
• You need a new appearance or voice.
• The companion requires its own backstory and motivations.
• You want to share or potentially publish the fictional AI character.

Use both for a fully defined roleplay

A custom character can define the AI’s role while a Persona defines the user’s role. Make sure the two histories are compatible. If the companion believes the user is a longtime colleague but the Persona says they have never met, the first conversation needs an explanation.

Availability can change. At the time of checking, the official Persona guide lists the feature as an Ultimate-tier capability. Subscription features may change, so verify current availability before relying on it.

A practical example

You create an AI companion who is a cautious expedition leader. Your Persona is the team’s new cartographer. The companion’s backstory determines leadership style; the Persona tells it your experience and role. A different Persona could make you a journalist, but a separate chat may be better if the histories should not overlap.

Think in terms of conversation direction

Information attached to the companion tells the AI how to behave as the other participant. Information attached to the Persona tells the AI how to interpret and address the user. When a detail is placed on the wrong side, the conversation may assign motives or history to the wrong character.

Use compatible names and histories

If a Persona says the user is meeting the companion for the first time, avoid reusing a chat whose history establishes a long relationship. A new chat with private memory is usually clearer. If the role is part of the existing continuity, state how it relates to what has already happened.

Do not use Persona switching as a memory reset

The official documentation says switching changes context for new messages but does not rewrite past conversation history. If the goal is isolation, use the Multiple Chats memory controls rather than expecting a new Persona to erase established assumptions.

Audit the setup from both viewpoints. Write one sentence beginning “The companion believes…” and one beginning “The user is playing…”. If the sentences overlap or contradict, revise the character or Persona details before chatting. This simple check prevents many role-assignment errors.

Common setup mistakes

Do not place the companion’s goals in the user Persona or describe the user’s identity as part of the AI character. Avoid switching Persona midway through a sensitive scene without explaining the change. Do not expect Persona selection to isolate memories or repair a contradictory chat history.

When the setup becomes confusing, write the two roles separately and open a new private chat. Clear identity boundaries are more valuable than preserving a thread that no longer has coherent assumptions.
